PUTIGNANO - FESTA DELL'ORSO
An old proverb from Putignano says that if on the 2nd February it is sunny, bears go out from their lairs to collect food and wood for because winter will be longer. During the Carnevale, a mock trial in ancient costume is held, where the bear is questioned in the wonderful scenery of Piazza del Plebiscito. The question is: Will spring come soon this year? The answer depends on the weather: if the 2nd of Febraury was sunny then spring is very far away... and the poor bear's supplies will be sequestered!26/12/2011

CASTELLANA GROTTE - LA NOTTE DELLA FANOVE
A pyrotechnics dream! This bonfire festival was established to commemorate the intervention of the Madonna della Vetrana in 1691 when she is said to have saved the town of Castellana Grotte from the continuation of a terrible bubonic plague. In the main square 2 enormous bonfires, at least 3 storeys high are erected and in all the surrounding streets and piazzettas of the historical centre there are dozens of smaller fires. By 9pm the town was buzzing and all the bonfires merrily aflame. Stalls selling all number of tempting hot snacks lined the streets. Our favourite fire of the night was manned by an inventive fellow who had set up a cauldron arrangement above the flames and was handing out delicious little cups of hot wine straight from the cauldron to passers by. A perfect complement to the festivities!
